The Immersion Course is a 12-week course that takes students through 12 modules of material focusing on the entire residential interior design process from initial conceptualizing to design development all the way through project completion. We will cover design principles, terminology, ergonomics, drawing to scale, and you will try your hand at developing your own designs for various rooms of the home. You can submit your finished project assignments for critique and review as well as participate in a weekly LIVE Q&A session by submitting your questions in advance.

The time commitment varies a bit for everyone, but people in all walks of life (full-time workers, college students, new parents, recently retired, etc.) can take this course and work through it at their own pace. That’s the beauty of taking courses online!

There is a LIVE call each week where I will cover material that corresponds with your module topics. You will always know, in advance, what I am going to cover each week. You can also submit specific questions regarding course material prior
to any of the live calls and I will answer them during the Q&A portion.

Even if you don’t have a specific question, these weekly calls are full of information and add to your immersion into the topic of design. Just by listening in, someone might ask a question that you didn’t even realize you had!

And remember, you’ll have lifetime access to the course, and the content never expires. You can truly go through it as slowly as you like! You can always join the weekly live calls and stay in touch with the private community by committing just a few minutes each day.

To ensure a solid foundation and build community, the Immersion Course is only offered as a full 12-module course. Even if you have some past interior design or decorating education or work experience, you most likely have not utilized these methods and concepts before.

I have had long-time, professional (even iconic) interior designers hear my talks and contact me privately to say they learned something new they had never thought about before.

Those who feel proficient in some of the drawing basics when we cover drawing rooms to scale will be encouraged to work through those lessons and spend any extra time on sketching and gathering inspiration for the coming modules.

Minimum requirements include:

• A computer and/or smartphone and WiFi with which you can log in to our classroom platform, download necessary documents and participate in LIVE sessions and discussions on our community portal.
• A notebook dedicated to this course for taking notes and sketching out designs when inspiration strikes.
• A notebook or loose-pack of graph paper with a grid of ¼” squares.
• Pencils and sketch or tracing paper.
• Apps that we tend to use a lot: Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, Go-To-Meeting (these are all free).
• Many students create binders or sections within one large binder for EACH module. You can have fun with these and make them as cheap and utilitarian as you like, OR select different colors for each and create something that you’ll want to keep on your bookshelf as a reference forever. That said binders are optional. Basic manila folders will work just fine for organizing your course material and projects.

It is not necessary to have previous drawing experience to design well or to take this course. You will learn how to draw to scale (meaning, to shrink down real measurements to proportionally fit onto a piece of paper!) but trust me when I say, we start from the most elementary level and ease you into it. With practice, it will become second nature to you.

We also won't be using computer software to draw either. I feel strongly that a big part of learning spatial relationships comes from the tactile practice of hand drawing and learning to use tools to determine scale, as opposed to simply plugging in dimensions or coordinates on a computer screen. I’ve seen over and over again that the most inspired designs come from feeling those spatial relationships into reality rather than allowing the computer to materialize them.

Once you fully understand the principles of design and ergonomics of space, computers are an incredibly vital tool in presenting your ideas. There will be future courses and workshops that focus on learning the best digital tools and computer software for developing your designs more efficiently. But… first things first!

In today’s digitally connected world, residential design trends and philosophies among different countries have definitely blurred and morphed together since I first started designing almost 30 years ago! That said, some differences still remain from region to region.

Most of the design principles and furniture placement covered in this course is universal. We will discuss some cultural differences as it pertains to ergonomics (spatial distance requirements for comfortable living), but even that has become more universal in recent years.

We will focus on design trends in the United States, but part of what makes virtual learning so interesting is that the student community comes from all over the globe. That means we can share ideas, arrangements, color palettes, etc. that may be specific to our own region but could inspire someone else across the country, or even on the other side of the world! HOW FUN!
